Weather Policy

We expect the High Peaks Farmers Market to occur rain or shine. We have made a commitment to our customers to be open on the dates and hours published. Our vendors have worked many long hours and traveled distances to serve their customers. Our loyal customers reciprocate by coming prepared with their raincoats and umbrellas to shop and enjoy the market!

However, the weather is one thing out of our control and, as everyone who lives here knows, it’s the Adirondacks. Weather can change rapidly from a sunny day to a downpour, sometimes with a dose of wind and lightning.

The safety of our vendors and attendees is of utmost concern. In the event of adverse weather conditions, the farmers market may be delayed or canceled. If a thunderstorm, tornado warning, tornado watch, heat advisory, or severe and consistent rain occurs prior to the opening of the Market and there is reason to believe the threat will persist through much of the market hours, the market opening may be delayed, or canceled altogether.

The decision to either delay or cancel the market will be made by 6am the day of the market and will be based on the prediction of 80% chance or more of severe weather during market hours.

If severe weather conditions develop after the market has opened, customers, vendors and volunteers are expected to move to a safe place until the weather has passed. In most cases the safest place will be in their vehicles. If more than 60 minutes have passed and the storm continues or the Market Manager can verify an extended storm cell’s presence exceeding the remaining open hours of the market, the market will be closed for the day.

Communication: As soon as a decision is made, vendors will be notified via email and phone. Attendees will be updated via the High Peaks Farmers Market website and social media.

Hopefully these safety steps are rarely used.  In the event we do need them, your attention to the guidelines will help get everything into order quickly and safely.

Thank you!
